Ridge Run, Club La Santa, Lanzarote - 26/03/2006

Accomplished Triathlete Jon Mansfield proved he was on top form, completing the 13km run in 48.15. He was 8th in a field of 171 and 3rd Britin his age, despite the high temperatures and challenging terrain of a volcanic ridge and dirt tracks.

Southern 12 stage relay

Clive Sentance reports....

Following an invite to join my old clubmates from Dulwich Runners, I trekked off to Milton Keynes for this popular event. My times in the recent county relays got me a berth in the A team, and I'm pleased to say I didn't let the team down. The relay consists of 6 long legs of 8000m and 6 short legs of 5500m, and I completed a short leg in 19:30 (equal to 5K of about 17:40). Overall we placed 25th team, earning an invite to the National 12 stage relays in Birmingham - the first time ever for Dulwich.

Cleevewold 14, 26/03/2006

The Tewkesbury pair of Angie Sadler and Phillip Howells both achieved personal best event times in the 14 mile multi-terrain Cleevewold Race held on a tortuous and very hilly Cleeve Common route on Sunday. Angie was up with the leaders of the 100 runner field from the start, holding her place to finish a very impressive 19th and once again not only the 1st lady home, but also by default, the first lady vet over 45. Her time of 1 hour 56 minutes and 45 seconds was a personal best time by nearly 2 minutes from when she last ran the event in 2004.

Phillip had a more difficult first few miles at the back of the pack, feeling jaded from the effects perhaps of having a tooth out on Thursday and the antibiotics he was on, from a still nagging hamstring injury and no doubt from a 10 mile cycling time trial of the day before! However, he got going from about 5 miles and passed a lot of runners to finish strongly in 49th place with a time of 2 hours 8 minutes and 14 seconds - a beating by over 6 minutes of his time from 2005.

Both PBs were particulary rewarding since it was generally accepted that course conditions were tough with the recent rain making it very muddy and for most runners, a slower event. Angie was, as usual, a very popular ladies winner and her rewards at the presentation were the perpetual Ladies Salver Trophy, some race clothing and a wonderfully aromatic whole Gloucester cheese.

A big thank you......

Jason Draper made the following comment on an earlier post, and it's well worth reading. I'm sure we would all agree with the thoughts expressed.

"I would just like to mention those who come and support us all who run our races on these cold days, mostly early Sunday mornings. So thanks especially to my partner Lisa Gutch and my Mum Margaret who between them have missed only a handful of races ,KOR and others, during my 3 years with the club. In fact they are seen at more races than some of our running members. They are there to support me and all of us and I think you will agree that without the support of the crowd some of the races we do would not be what they are. I would like to extend my thanks to other spouses and relatives etc. who also attend to support us regularly and occasionally especially Richard Cowley who seems to be around to support the current Mrs.Cowley whenever she runs! And thanks to those I haven't named as well, you know who you are.I know it can be boring for them sometimes especially on the longer races and journeys. Thanks also to all of those who are involved in behind the scenes work with the club, organising and helping.Without all of these people we would not be who and what we are."

Bath half marathon, 19/03/2006

3 Tewkesbury runners travelled to Bath to complete in the Half Marathon. 1st back in for the club was Stuart Buchan who set a new PB for the distance by over a minute in a time of 1:33:02. This shows him in good form with London his next target. Stuart was closely followed home by Amanda in a time of 1:33:25. Amanda was also happy with her performance again ahead of London. Finally Lisa rounded off the team setting another PB with a time of 1:53:04 which was well inside her target of 2hrs. Another great performace!!

Bath Half Results...

Forest Half Marathon, 19/3/2006

TEWKESBURY LADIES TAKE TEAM PRIZE AT FOREST HALF.

Cathy Dudfield reports...

11 club members took part in the Forest Half Marathon. The course was changed from last year due to the increased entry. From those who have run it before and also organisers, it was agreed that it was slightly tougher than the previous years.
There were 2 outstanding performances being that the Tewkesbury Ladies team consisting of Angie, myself and Carol took 1st ladies team prize. Given the size of the field we were well chuffed!! Also Angie was 2nd lady home and 1st V45 which again she was very pleased with.
1st home for the club was Roger which was even more impressive as he was last to start (Was in the mens toilet when the gun went!!!) He came in 35th in 1:28:11. Next in was Angie who had an excellent run finishing 55th in 1:29:57. Jason came in shortly after in 64th place in a time of 1:31:25. Phillip continued his good form in 120th place in a time of 1:36:09 closely followed by Barry, 134th place in 1:36:56. Steve had a solid run, feeling good in tha last 5 miles setting a time of 1:39:32 in 172nd place. I came in next setting a time of 1:42:28 in 220th which i was over the moon with and gained another top 50 female placing. I felt in good shape taking 5 minutes off last years time. Carol finished in 266th place and also placing in the top 50 females She finished strongly in a time of 1:45:03. Stuart was next up in 309th place in a time of 1:46:27 which after a period off running with a foot injury was a good starting point in returning to fitness. Mike Primmett had been ill all week with a bug and suffered through out the race but managed to finish in 341st in a time of 1:47:16. Mike Ward completed the team finishing in 2:01:18 and in 626th. Mike finished the race along with a work colleague who was completing his 1st half marathon. All in all a good mornings work in the Forest with weather conditions almost perfect.

Forest of Dean Half Results..
35th - 1:28:11 - Roger
55th - 1:29:57 - Angie
64th - 1:31:25 - Jason

Rhayader 20, 19/03/2006

Andy Hawkins reports the following results from the Rhayader 20.

Andy H, 4th, 2:07:35
Nigel Tillott, 93rd, 2:34:12

There were 352 finishers. 352 brave hardy souls who survived the beast of a climb from 4 to 6 miles (800ft of climbing) and the Arctic wind which was in your face for a good chunk of the last half of the race. Winning time was 2:02:59.

Grizzly, 12/3/2006

Phillip Howells reports....
I tackled the normally 20 mile tough run of the Grizzly in East Devon today, a cult event with such a following that even though it allows 2,000 runners is always closed within two weeks of entries opening in the previous September. Conditions were amongst the toughest in its history, with very strong and bitter winds hardly above freezing such that the route was reduced by 1.5 miles because one of the beach runs was deemed too dangerous. The race starts along half a mile of pebble beach in Seaton so that the first mile was run off in a slick 13 minutes (and that was just for the first 25% of the field that I was in). It then tackles clip top paths, more sections of pebble beach, steep muddy paths made very slippy by recent rain and a 200 yard stretch of muddy 'bog' which is literally more than knee deep of either chocolate-drink-like runny stuff or the glutinous sort that captures shoes and more if you are not careful! It ends over a cruel stretch of nearly a mile of pebble beach and once over the line you then experience the joys of the local fire service offering a fire-hose of full-force water straight from the sea with scrubbing brushes to get rid of the caked mud on shoes and legs - it works at least! Then we all get the much coveted, usual quirky teashirt as a lasting momento of the fun of that year.

Given that my legs were a bit heavy from the speed training on Friday and a 35 mile bike ride and ten mile run on Saturday, I was satisfied to finish a respectable 347th of 1,528 finishers, 11th of 163 runners over 55 (120 in the MVO55 cat alone) in a time of 3hrs 5mins exactly, less than an hour behind the winning time of 2-12-46

Your club needs you!!

Helpers are needed for a drinks station at the Tewkesbury half marathon on 7 May. We currently have about 12 volunteers but the more the merrier.

Angie has suggested that we put a team into the Chelt Circular Challenge 26 mile walk / run on 18 June. See her if you're interested.

County Road Relays, 4/03/2006

It was medals for both Mens and Ladies teams as Tewkesbury AC turned out in force at the White Horse (formerly the Globe). The Mens A team took silver with fine runs by Andy Hawkins and Simon Hall, who gave Jason Draper and Clive Sentance a cushion for the last two legs. The Ladies A took gold, with Angie Sadler running a fast anchor leg after some great running from Carol Cowley and Cathy Dudfield. Silver went to the B team of Lisa Kane, Bev Thomas and Sandie Harwood. Special mention must also go to the Mens B team (Rob, Phil, Roger and Steve), who performed well and gave excellent support.
Times will be published when I get them

Coastal Marathon, 26/02/2006

Alan Dumper reports....

"On Saturday ultra distance specialists Phillip Howells and Angie Sadler travelled to a very snowy and windy Devon for the Coastal Marathon at Beesands near Kingsbridge.Conditions were so bad that the organisers decided that the marathon course was too dangerous and decided to use two laps of the half marathon course instead. Completing the first lap in 2 hours and 18 minutes the pair caught another group of runners which included the leading lady. This caused the pace to increase as Sadler battled for the lead and in the end she lost out by a few seconds to her younger rival but was happy to take first place in the veterans race and to finish a magnificent 10th overall in 4 hours and 27 minutes. Howells battled on strongly finishing two minutes later in 11th place and take the vet 50 prize.
